WHAT IS MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY?

Myofunctional therapy is an exercise-based approach that helps children develop healthy oral and facial muscle patterns. In pediatrics, it focuses on improving how the tongue, lips, and jaw rest and function during breathing, chewing, swallowing, speech, and sleep.

Child Eating Apple

ADDRESS SPEECH & FEEDING CONCERNS

Targets tongue placement, lip strength, and muscle coordination. Can support:

  • clearer speech articulation

  • efficient chewing

  • safe swallowing patterns

REDUCE AIRWAY AND SLEEP-RELATED ISSUES

Promotes nasal breathing and proper tongue posture to support airway stability, which may help reduce:

  • mouth breathing

  • snoring

  • sleep-disordered breathing patterns

Small Child with Large Glasses

IMPROVE OVERALL ORAL AND  FACIAL FUNCTION

Retrains habitual muscle patterns to enhance jaw stability, facial muscle balance, and oral rest posture, supporting healthy facial development and long-term functional outcomes.

SUPPORTS ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

Helps establish proper oral muscle function and posture to complement orthodontic care, improve treatment stability, and reduce the risk of relapse by addressing underlying muscular habits.

Commonly provided before and after a frenectomy (tongue-tie release), myofunctional therapy helps prepare the oral muscles, optimize mobility, and promote proper function and healing for improved long-term outcomes.
